Complacency breeds failure

Running a business is not easy. As a decision maker or business owner you want to spend time on the things that you are good at and make you money. If your business is big enough or you want your business to grow, you cannot do it all yourself. You have expert staff to do the things they are good at. In the information technology arena you likely do not have a staff that can keep up with all the new innovations. Your business often stays status quo and you only call upon a vendor when things break or your are forced to move forward by some external pressure. Bert Lance coined the term “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. This “leave things alone” approach may have worked in the past or in other fields but it flies in the face of continuous improvement, quality management and the IT world in general. Netflix’s success is due to challenging the traditional thinking while the cable providers were complacent. Andy Grove’s quote is appropriate here “Success breeds complacency. Complacency breeds failure. Only the paranoid survive.”

So what to do?

Be proactive and not reactive.

If you cannot do it in house then look for a vendor who will be your partner. A good partner will understand your business and take the time to help from your daily processes to the overall picture and future direction; from the minutia to the broad strokes.

At TELECO we pride ourselves in being a good partner. If you are interested in being proactive with your technology, give us a call and we can discuss how you can move forward with technology and be your partner in that journey.
